Niilo worked most of his career until his death as an editor and as an advertising editor for the newspaper “UUSI SUOMI”. He married Lahja Amanda Laakkonen in the year 1939. During the war 1941-1944, Niilo served in the Infantry Regiment JR 26. In the years before and after the war, he was active in various social activities, including the Association of Conscripts, the Kookomus Youth Union and the Union of Finnish Work. Choir singing was one of Niilo's hobbies. Niilo and “Lali” raised three children, Tuula Tellervo Kivinen née Kutvonen, Juha Tapio Kutvonen, and Anna-Liisa Kotamies née Kutvonen.
